As a result of the El Niño-induced drought, dry conditions prevailed in the country during the planting season in Aug-Dec 2015, preventing most farmers from planting. The few areas that were planted suffered from failed germination, heat or water stress. The harvest in May-June 2016 was the lowest ever recorded, leaving up to 725,000 individuals food insecure and in need of urgent assistance. Since 2012 and in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS), FAO implemented an Emergency and Resilience Programme (ERP) which promoted early recovery in the aftermath of the drought through support to the agriculture production and incorporating climate change adaptation measures. The ERP also promoted the restoration of productive assets combined with skills development on nutrition sustainable agricultural practices to enhance resilience. Similarly, the Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the Adventist Development and Refilief Agency (ADRA), World Vision Int. (WVI), and the Lesotho Red Cross Society (LRCS) contributed to the response through livelihood packages and home gardening kits.
